Have them drive so you can enjoy the ride!
This is a beautiful winding ride through the jungle. It is best to let someone local who knows the road do the driving so you can just enjoy the views of the flora, fauna and lovely waterfalls. Our driver Nick knew the best spots and was knowledgeable about all the places we were seeing. We would definitely do it again!

My family of three were picked up from our hotel in Lahaina by our driver/tour guide, Lyman. Lyman was personable, funny, super knowledgeable of the area and island, and a great driver! He was mindful of our interests, needs and comfort. We had snacks and lunch at some local spots and developed a newfound appreciation for the nature and beauty that Maui has to share! The tour was about nine hours long, but time flew by and we hardly noticed how long we had been driving around from start to finish.

A stress free trip to Hāna and the backside.
My wife and I went on the road to Hāna ultimate trip which included returning via the backside. Eugene is a small business owner, who was great. He is extremely knowledgeable. The trip is customized to your likes and speed. You get to go to places that larger vans don’t go to. I’m glad I did not drive the roads myself. Lots of hairpin turns, single lane roads and bridges. You get to sit back and enjoy the scenery rather than focus on driving. Eugene knew that the backside road would be closed while they worked on shoring up the cliffs and that it wouldn’t open until the afternoon, so he planned the trip accordingly. A sign also said local traffic only.

She shared lots of information (on the landscape, history, different vegetation, animals, etc) as we drove, and really let us make the trip our own on where and when we stopped to check things out. The provider is very flexible on this 24 hr rental. They offered to preprogram a route for us but we used bluetooth and made our own. Great fun driving the North to West Shore from Momma's Fish House around Mauna Kahalawai stopping at key points along the way. Would recommend!
