Agnes is the kind of guide you hope for but rarely get — warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely fun to be around. From the moment she picked us up, she set the tone for an incredible day in Hilo. She knows SO much about the island, but she shares it in a way that feels like a great conversation, not a lecture. She welcomed every question we had (and we had plenty!), and she made it feel like she was genuinely excited to share more whenever we asked.She took us everywhere: an erupting volcano (yes, erupting!), local shops, a beautiful beach, waterfalls, gardens, and those massive banyan trees that make you feel tiny in the best way. Early on, she noticed how interested we were in the plants around us, so she started pointing out names, stories, and uses — and we even ended up tasting wild ginger on the side of the road. It was such a fun, unexpected moment that made the day feel even more personal.And when someone mentioned macadamia nuts, she didn’t hesitate — she made it happen. Agnes is flexible, thoughtful, and clearly loves what she does. Her car was stocked with water, snacks, and umbrellas, which tells you everything about how prepared and caring she is.This tour was one of our favorite experiences in Hawaii, and Agnes made it unforgettable. Book her — you’ll be so glad you did.

We had a great experience from beginning to end. Steve was very responsive and helpful. Our tour guide Amanda was very nice and knowledgeable. We enjoy learning about the culture. We were provided with a great meal, wich provided sample of local food. This was a nice unexpected touch. Overall, I was very pleased with the service. I would definitely recommend touring with Aloha Aina.

Shawn and Lisa were incredibly attentive and responsive to all of my questions, even before I officialy booked my tours. I joined them for both the Pololū Valley hike and the In-depth tour of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and both were exceptional.My tours were well-organized, thoughtfully planned, educational and genuinely fun. Shawn's passion for Hawaiian ecology, especially native plants and birds, really stood out and added so much depth to the experience. I learned so much about the island's landscape, history, and cultural significance.What impressed me most was their flexibility and professionalism. Kīlauea erupted the day before our Volcanoes National Park tour, and they didn’t miss a beat. They kept me well-informed about the park’s status and seamlessly adapted the itinerary to ensure the day was still unique, safe, and memorable.An added bonus: they share photos from the hike digitally for your personal use, which is such a thoughtful touch and a great way to relive the experience.If you’re visiting the Big Island and want a curated, meaningful experience, I cannot recommend Backroad Adventures enough.

First of all the guide was beyond great. He was incredibly knowledgeable about everything. His knowledge and experience raised the tour to a level we’ve never experienced before. The itinerary was beyond complete. It covered everything listed and more. If fact we canceled another tour scheduled for later since it would have been redundant. The people we met a the various stops were very friendly outgoing and obviously proud of what they do. I could go on forever trying to describe our experience. I believe our guide was Jim.

What a wonderful time we had!! Seeing the volcano, waterfalls and the shore line of the big island was just amazing. Shawn our guide was very knowledgeable of the Island. Not only did we enjoy the sites, but we learned a lot ! Our daughters have food allergies so he made sure we had options when we went to lunch. I highly recommend this tour.
