In all my years of travel, I don't think I've had a better guide than Aaron. His passion for what he does spilled over to everyone on this excursion. We were hesitant with the impending Hurricane Nolo coming in the next day. Aaron was not only reassuring but he made adjustments and additions to our tour that extended the trip and added great value. Friendly, knowledgeable, safety-minded are just some of his attributes. Our tour guide Agnes went above and beyond our expectations with her knowledge of the area and the sites we visited. We saw so much but never felt rushed or hurried. Trust me you won’t be disappointed if you book this tour especially if you have Agnes as your guide!

I can’t say enough good things about this tour! It was amazing and Igor was just wonderful. We have teenagers and they can be difficult to please at times. Igor was kind patient but more importantly took us to all these wonderful places around the Island. It’s a long day of traveling around the island but it’s well worth it. There are plenty of food stops along the way so don’t worry about that. Bring layers because climate changes rapidly. My girls loved Igor and we loved that he shared his favorite spots with us! Thank you for a memorable day!

We learned so much about the growing, harvesting, roasting, and brewing process, and the tasting was both informative and enjoyable. Aaron is the MAN! Amazing tour and day with him. he has a NEW passenger van and takes you to all the BEST places in Hilo. Need to stop at Longs...no problem...want the best poke on the island...he takes you there also. Much better deal than NCL tours which are cattle drives, this is a personal GREAT trip. Hiking with Backroad Adventures was hands-down the highlight of my trip to the Big Island. Shawn and Lisa were incredibly attentive and responsive to all of my questions, even before I officialy booked my tours. I joined them for both the Pololū Valley hike and the In-depth tour of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and both were exceptional.My tours were well-organized, thoughtfully planned, educational and genuinely fun. Shawn's passion for Hawaiian ecology, especially native plants and birds, really stood out and added so much depth to the experience. I learned so much about the island's landscape, history, and cultural significance.What impressed me most was their flexibility and professionalism. Kīlauea erupted the day before our Volcanoes National Park tour, and they didn’t miss a beat. They kept me well-informed about the park’s status and seamlessly adapted the itinerary to ensure the day was still unique, safe, and memorable.An added bonus: they share photos from the hike digitally for your personal use, which is such a thoughtful touch and a great way to relive the experience.If you’re visiting the Big Island and want a curated, meaningful experience, I cannot recommend Backroad Adventures enough.

Best snorkeling experience!
I had a great experience New Year’s day with Colin. It was my family of 5 and it felt very personal and fun. We saw dolphins, whales, and lots of fish. The snorkeling spot was awesome, and the food and drink provided was wonderful. They also have prescription goggles with was nice and the whole trip was very accommodating. Colin told us all about history on the island and went above and beyond with the history and sight seeing.
