My experience was so EPIC. I have dreamt of learning how to surf for the longest. My instructor Jack was AMAZING. He was attentive, funny, and provided feedback.Learning how to surf is definitely tiring- a full body work out, and requires good balance- helps if you have a strong core.I was given a vest to wear over my bathing top and water shoes. If you have the option for the tights- I’d take it. Getting on and off the board can be a lot on your legs if exposed - it’s what you’re comfortable with.Definitely stretch and open your hips before going - it would help a lot.I wish we had more time- it was so much fun!! I can’t wait to see what the videos look like. Thank you so much for this memorable experience.

I had such an amazing surfing experience! Peter was an awesome instructor—patient, encouraging, and great at making me feel comfortable in the water. You could tell he was passionate about surfing and teaching. Elijah was also a huge help and made the experience even more enjoyable. They both did a great job explaining everything and cheering me on, and I were able to catch some waves and have so much fun! Highly recommend booking with them if you’re looking for a fun and memorable surfing experience in Hawaii! 🌺🏄‍♀️🌊

We had the best experience! We booked a semi private lesson for 3 first time young adult surfers (17-25). Same day booking was easy and accommodating. Kala was great with communication and where to meet up. Our instructor Aton made our experience fantastic! He helped us catch the waves and we were up on the first wave! Not only helpful with surfing, but with all local questions and recommendations of the island. Our favorite of all the experiences we did! Highly recommend!

Another great session with Ty Gurney Surf School!I had a two-hour lesson on August 8 with Aiden, and this was another step forward in getting back into surfing.The ocean was pretty placid that morning, so there wasn’t a ton to work with, but Aiden made the most of what we had. He paddled up from his previous lesson right before our start time, introduced himself, and we headed straight out. One of the first things he did was ask what I wanted to work on. He listened, addressed exactly those areas, and did a great job explaining what I could change and why.We worked on my paddling, positioning, and catching waves on my own 9’6” board. I caught some waves and whitewater, got to my feet, and kept working even when the ocean wasn’t giving us much. Toward the end I was still hoping we’d get one more good wave—which probably says everything about how much fun I was having.This was also the first time I’ve done the full two-hour lesson with Ty Gurney. My first lesson, back in June, was on one of their big 12-foot boards with a lot of assistance. Since then I’ve gotten my own board and have been learning how to do more and more for myself. It’s harder, but it’s also much more rewarding.Aiden was patient, knowledgeable, encouraging, and gave me tips I can actually take with me when I’m surfing on my own.And as I was getting started, the previous group was coming back in from better conditions earlier that morning. The smiles on their faces said plenty about their experience too.Another great morning in the water. I’m really enjoying the progression and will absolutely keep coming back to Ty Gurney Surf School.Mahalo, Aiden! Can’t wait for the next one. 🤙🌊

Ivan was incredibly helpful and such an amazing teacher! My boyfriend is a bit of a slow learner (sorry for the shade 😂), but thanks to Ivan's instruction, he was able to pop up and ride waves on his very first day! That really says a lot about Ivan's teaching skills. Ivan was super encouraging and got us out in the water right away, which I honestly think is the best way to learn. Instead of spending the whole lesson on the beach, he had us practicing on real waves while giving us feedback and helping us improve each time. It made such a difference. It was absolutely worth every penny, and I'd highly recommend taking a lesson with him!

The greatest surfing experience ever!
Me and my husband had the greatest time ever trying to learn how to surf with Andy from 808 surf School for the first time! We had the beach all to ourselves, and with Andys great instructions we both managed to catch many waves despite it being our first time trying out surfing. He is really good at teaching people how to surf, and you can tell that he loves what he is doing and that he is super experienced and knowledgeable. It was also really easy to get in contact with them to ask questions regarding the upcoming lesson. We really recommend Andy and 808 surf school.

10/10 Stars - Uncle Savage is an absolute legend! If you want your kids to learn to surf safely while having the time of their lives, Uncle Savage is the instructor to book. He recently taught my teenage boys, who were total beginners, and the experience was a perfect 10 out of 10. His coaching in the surf was masterful. Uncle Savage coached and gave the boys instant positive feedback on their techniques. He knew exactly how to read the swells and positioned them perfectly for success. Thanks to his patience and guidance, both of my boys were standing up and riding waves way sooner than we ever expected. The pure joy and confidence he instilled in them was incredible to watch. By the end of the lesson, my boys weren’t just stoked on surfing—they were already asking when they could go back out to surf. He is a phenomenal teacher and an all-around amazing human. We definitely recommend booking with Uncle Savage!

Andy was an excellent instructor - both my daughter and I got up on our first try! - and we had a blast! Minimal shore instruction, we got in the water and learned by doing and Andy made it very easy. Would do this again without question.Note they contact you the day-of with a location - I wasn’t expecting that and initially was confused - but they pick the beach based on the day’s weather and tides to give an optimal experience. Worked out so well in our favor and we had a beach almost completely to ourselves!
