Private Outrigger Canoe Surfing Experience
Overview
Outrigger canoes first arrived in Hawaii around 200 AD, some large enough to hold up to 80 people, and were filled with essential items like edible plants, water and animals to ensure a somewhat safer voyage for the brave explorers who took off in search of land.
Learning to surf an outrigger canoe is a right of passage for men and women of the sea, and it is an honor to do so in the Hawaiian islands where surfing gained a global foothold.

What To Expect
We will meet at a predetermined location to begin with on-land instruction. We will discuss how to properly set up, maintain, and use equipment (ie. outrigger canoe, paddle, rudder, etc.). We will then discuss the current weather conditions, your individual physical capacity and experience, and some basics on maneuvering the canoe through surf. Once on the water, I will provide further coaching and instruction about paddle technique, share my observations about the water and wind movement, and point out any obstacles to be aware of. In most cases I will be in charge of steering the canoe and you will take direction from me about when and how hard to paddle in order to catch a wave. We will spend around 1 hour surfing before returning to the shore. Once we are back on land I will have a small snack to offer you and will be happy to help you take photos or answer any questions you may have about canoes, surfing, or anything related to life on O'ahu.
